VIEW Version 9.6
================
Added ability to convert between ASCII and ANSI character sets. This
enables you to view Windows NOTEPAD files and others that use the ANSI
character set for high order characters (e.g. é, â, ô). Conversion from
ANSI can be toggled from the file menu or on the fly while a file is being
viewed. Conversion to ANSI can be done on the fly. NOTE: this has meant
that the function key F10, formerly used on the view screen menu for exiting
the menu, has been changed to space bar; F10 and Shift-F10 are now used for
the ASCII-ANSI conversions. Changed the "show memory parameters" key on
the file list screen from ? to m, for compatibility with European and other
non-US keyboards. Added a user-definable command for initializing printer.
VIEW Version 9.7
================
Improved the display of ASCII files when the line wrap is set by VIEW
rather than using carriage returns in the file being viewed (i.e. when F3
is pressed at the file selection menu to toggle ASCII line wrap ON). You
can use this feature for reformatting ASCII files - e.g. to change the
line width.
Added support for viewing Windows clipboard text files (i.e. files saved
as CLP files from the clipboard).
Improved the display of Compuserve mail and message files
Added a feature to enable you to save files in a special ASCII format
suitable for importing into word processors without a hard return at the
end of each line.
Added a link to the external program HLP2DOC, which translates Windows help
files to a format that VIEW can read.
Improved the command line options. The /mem switch is replaced with a
/mnnn switch, where nnn is a three digit number that allows you to
temporarily override the default setting for allocating memory blocks. The
/xnnn switch is therefore no longer needed. Also, the order of switches is
no longer important.
VIEW Version 9.7a
=================
Added bookmark function, including automatic setting of bookmarks when VIEW
reads ASCII files that contain form feeds. Added a function to go to text
currently at top of display (useful for reading contents and going directly
to appropriate section). file. Added a /a command line switch to enable
automatic translation of ANSI files (such as produced by Windows Notepad)
to ASCII.
VIEW Version 9.7b
=================
Fixed problem with display of ASCII files in which unwanted blank line
occurs.
VIEW Version 9.7c
=================
Added user-selectable choice for maximum number of files show in the file
list. Added functions in the file selection menu to load and view a file
in the current directory directly, and to go to directly to a block of
files beginning with a user-specified letter. Verified that VIEW will read
Wordperfect 6.1 files.
VIEW Version 9.8
================
Added function to detect and view World Wide Web HTML files. Added a
command line switch /C to convert file directly from command line to
format suitable for import into word processor. Improved "errorlevel"
functionality for running VIEW from batch files.
VIEW Version 9.9
=================
Spacebar now works the same as PgDn when viewing file.
Changed the /w switch (for changing column width) to /l in order to use /w
for a different function:
/w - automatically convert high-order characters to Windows/UNIX character
set. If used in conjunction with /c or /C (convert file directly) the
saved file is in the DOS format (i.e. line breaks use carriage
return/line feed combination).
/u - as for /w but if a file is converted directly it is saved in the UNIX
file format (line breaks are line feed only). Use this function for
converting files for import into a UNIX-based text editor.
/a - automatically converts Windows/UNIX character set to IBM-PC ASCII set.
Added a function "save as DOS or UNIX" when saving a file that is currently
being viewed.
VIEW Version 9.9a
=================
Fixed problems with displaying very large files and showing "small
capitals" in WordPerfect 6.0/6.1 as capitals. Minor maintenance.
VIEW Version 9.9b
=================
Added trap to warn user that VIEW will not properly decode Word 6 files
saved with the "quick save" feature (owing to the extreme complexity of
such files). I will try to find a way to get VIEW to decode these files.
Added a /q switch, and also a q key in the file selection menu, to allow a
"quick view" mode, in which only the first screen's worth of a file is
shown. Corrected some problems with saving/converting files directly from
the file selection menu.
VIEW Version 9.9c
=================
Enhanced the "quick save" feature to allow "continue reading" option.
Improved the algorithm for handling files too big to view.
VIEW Version 9.9d
=================
Added /6 switch to command line (and "6" key at file selection menu) to
enable search through full Word 6 document to decode starting point of
text. See documentation file.
VIEW Version 9.9e
=================
Improved algorithm for detecting start of text in Word 6 files. Added
message and error code 1 if a Windows help file is not properly decoded by
the auxiliary freeware program "hlp2doc" (provided to registered users of
VIEW). Fixed problem reading several Word 6 files consecutively.
VIEW Version 9.9f
=================
Changed the algorithm for reading ASCII files to allow better display of
those that contain large blocks of text without embedded carriage return /
line feed combinations. If such a file is detected the line wrap is set to
on and the file is re-read.
VIEW Version 9.9g
=================
Corrected a bug in viewing Windows help files using hlp2doc (provided to
registered users). Added F8 - print directly via 2COL or JETCOL. NOTE:
the former F8, clear all bookmarks, was moved to Shift-F8
VIEW Version 10.0
=================
Substantial improvement of display of HTML files, including the ability to
show them with their HTML tags. VIEW also acts as a basic syntax checker
for missing > (e.g. in <li> or ; (e.g. in &cop;) terminators.
Improved the display of Wordperfect 6.1 files that in previous version
showed strings of characters such as: é éé é é é
It's still not perfect, but better.
Moved the "reset printer" function to a standalone program.
VIEW Version 10.0a
==================
Trapped bug when trying to print or convert Word 6 files directly from
command line or file selection menu.
Corrected bug that caused all print to file functions following a print to
file in word processor format to use that format.
Corrected problem in which the trapping of sequences like é éé é (see
above) in Wordperfect 6.1 files did not occur when printing/converting
directly.
VIEW Version 10.0b
==================
Added filter to remove <SCRIPT> ...</SCRIPT> text from HTML files.
Added Escape mechanism when reading, converting or printing files.
VIEW Version 10.0c
==================
Minor change to Escape mechanism. Minor change to Wordperfect 5.1 algorithm.
VIEW Version 10.0d
==================
Added a customization option (in VIEWCFG) to enable or disable interrupting
a file read.
VIEW Version 10.0e
==================
Added an abort function for each stage of user input at the "save or print
file" command (F6).
VIEW Version 10.0f
==================
Minor improvements to Word 6 and Wordperfect 6.0/6.1 decoding algorithms.
VIEW Version 10.0g
==================
Improved Wordperfect display of "small capitals" feature for common
accented characters. Wordperfect file text that has been tagged with the
"strikeout" format now shows as UPPER CASE for easier visibility.
VIEW Version 11.0
=================
Added more functionality to the file selection menu. This has meant
changing the functions of the Home and End keys. The keys are now:
Home - go to first file in current screen list
End - go to last file in current screen list
Ctrl-Home - go to first file in whole list
Ctrl-End - go to last file in entire list.
In addition the up arrow now takes you to the previous screen when at the
top of the current screen; the down arrow similarly tales you to the next
screen when at the end of the current screen.
These changes have meant that the F8 and F9 keys (select a file by name and
by first letter) have been dropped. Apologies to you if you are used to
using these, but they were incompatible with the new system. The new
functionality should help to compensate for this loss.
Added two toggles. To toggle speaker "beeps" (when an illegal key press is
made, press s. VIEW starts with sound off. To toggle word wrap on/off
when viewing a plain text file (ASCII or ANSI) press w. Note: the word
wrap parameter stays in effect for viewing subsequent files until w is
pressed again or F3 is pressed from the file selection menu.
Text search strings can now be up to 80 characters.
VIEW Version 11.1
=================
Improved support for code page 850.
VIEW Version 11.2
=================
Improved identification of ASCII files with high-order characters. Added
new command line switch /b This allows you to override the"break process"
setting you have chosen from the configuration program. When break is
configured to be on, pressing Esc interrupts the file read. With break
off, the whole file is read before you can exit. The /b allows you to
break out even when "break process: is configured as off.
VIEW Version 11.2a
==================
Added a new command line switch /mono to force display to monochrome. This
is useful for running VIEW on laptops or "palm" computers.
Added Alt-F8 as alternative for "s" (toggle sound), Alt-F9 as alternative
for "q" (toggle quick view from file selection menu), and Alt-F10 as
alternative for "w" (toggle line wrap on/off when viewing an ASCII file).
These additions are to accommodate possible variations in keyboards (e.g.
"azerty" rather than "qwerty").
VIEW Version 11.3
=================
Added the ability to change the default drive to which temporary files are
written (using the viewcfg program).
Changed VIEW so that if a text search string is listed on the command line,
VIEW goes directly to the first occurrence of the string when a file is
loaded.
VIEW Version 11.3a
==================
Added a command line switch, /s, to override the default way in which VIEW
looks for text in files when the search string is entered on the command
line. The default is case insensitive. The /s switch makes it case
sensitive.
